Gospel Music

Well, I finally did it.  I’ve always wanted to write a gospel song {on the spectrum, think more toward Jennifer Holliday….and less toward The Gaither Vocal Band}, and today, I did!

Even before The Shack came out, I had the tendency to personify the Holy Spirit as a cross between Aunt Jemimah and Queen Latifah.  All jolly and doughy and momma-like, but still street smart and sassy.  My Holy Spirit is someone who gives you a look and kicks you under the table when you say something mean.  Or who says with a sly wink before you go out, “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do”.  And my Holy Spirit is someone you can curl up and cry on, who will wipe off your face with a checkered apron that smells like nutmeg and laundry soap and home.

I’ve completed almost 7 songs for my Nashville project, and I’m supposed to present a total of 8-9 to my producer.  From that bunch, he’ll choose the best 5 to make an album from.  There is such a special place in my heart for gospel music.  For artists like Lauryn Hill, Eva Cassidy, Israel.  I love to sing that style of music, but I’ve never written anything.

So, today, I sat down determined at my piano.  I summoned the Holy Spirit inside me and looked up a few gospel chord progressions.  With a little adjusting and the addition of some lyrics I’ve been sitting on for several years, out came a song!

If it ends up on my Nashville album, great.  And if not, I’ll make a YouTube video or something so you can still hear it.
